Georgian Bay covers 5,792 square miles, almost as large as Lake Ontario. Its depth generally ranges between 100–300 ft (30–90 m), but near the main channel leading into Lake Superior, it reaches a maximum of about 540 ft (165 m).
Note: Some charts indicate a maximum depth of 561 ft (171 m).
2. What year was the first recorded swim across Georgian Bay?

On August 31, 1996, John Scott became the first person to swim across Georgian Bay. He entered the water at Lighthouse Point on Christian Island and arrived at Harbourview Park in Collingwood, completing the 31 km swim in 10 hours and 12 minutes.

Kitchikewana, a god of the Wendat Huron Nation, was a great warrior giant who protected the Georgian Bay area. Seeking a wife to calm his temper, he fell in love with the beautiful Wanakita, who was already married. Heartbroken, Kitchikewana carved the five bays of Severn Sound and scattered rocks over Georgian Bay, forming 29,999 islands. His final resting place, Giant’s Tomb, became the last of the 30,000 islands.

While there were historical re-enactments in 2001 and 2019, no actual battle occurred in Penetanguishene Bay. The area was part of the War of 1812, and in 1814, the British schooner HMS Nancy was sunk by Americans at the mouth of the Nottawasaga River near Wasaga Beach.
