Lake Cecebe or Ahmic Lake? The Lock Between Them Keeps Its Own Calendar

Each night of the summer season, staff leave the Magnetawan lock raised toward Lake Cecebe. In the morning the first boats heading for Ahmic Lake lock down at 10 a.m. The first boats heading back up to Cecebe go through at 10:30. The gates follow that same alternating rhythm every two hours until the last lockage up at 6:30 p.m. The structure is hand-operated and sits in the heart of the Village of Magnetawan. It is the only link between the two lakes that most buyers on this river system are deciding between.

Listings and guides describe the Magnetawan River System as one connected waterway running from Burk's Falls through Lake Cecebe and Magnetawan to Ahmic Harbour. On a map it is. On a calendar the connection holds for about ten weeks a year. For the rest of the open-water season, a cottage on Cecebe and a cottage on Ahmic sit on two separate bodies of water.

The timetable that sets your boating radius

The Municipality of Magnetawan publishes the schedule on its Dams & Locks page. That page also links the 2026 opening poster.

Direction Scheduled lockages
Down to Ahmic Lake 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m.
Up to Lake Cecebe 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m.
Season Typically end of June to the Sunday of Labour Day weekend
Fee $5.00 per day

Two lines on that page shape how the lock works in practice. The lock takes 30 minutes to change direction, and the municipality states plainly that "no special requests will be made." The municipal brochure adds that the chamber takes about 20 to 25 minutes to drain or fill. A trip through the lock is booked against a timetable. It works more like catching a ferry than opening a gate.

Take a Cecebe owner who wants a long lunch on Ahmic. They lock down at 10 or 12 and come back up at one of the half-hour slots. The 6:30 p.m. lockage is the last one back toward Cecebe. Miss it, and the boat stays on the Ahmic side until the next morning. An Ahmic owner heading up to Cecebe works the same timetable from the other direction.

Ten weeks against a seven-month boating year

The 2026 season opened on Thursday, June 25, according to the municipality's news page. The published season runs to the Sunday of Labour Day weekend, which in 2026 fell on September 6, the day before the municipal office's Labour Day closure on Monday, September 7. That is 74 days of scheduled service, roughly ten and a half weeks.

Boating starts long before that. The Cecebe Waterways Association has kept ice-out dates for Lake Cecebe going back to 1939. It defines ice-out as roughly 60 to 70 percent of the central lake open, with the river open through it. The recorded dates run from March 24 in 2012 to May 4 in 2018, and most fall in April. The Village of Burk's Falls says its riverfront launch is typically used from May through October.

Across a typical year, the river system runs in three phases.

  1. Spring: after ice-out, usually in April, both lakes are open water but the lock is not running.
  2. Late June to Labour Day weekend: the lock runs daily on its fixed timetable, and the river system works as one route.
  3. September into October: the launches are still in use, fall colour comes to the shoreline, and the lock is closed again.

For most of the time a boat is in the water, each lake is its own territory.

The season itself is not guaranteed either. In July 2025, after the municipality declared a significant weather event as of July 7, its notices reported the locks and submerged municipal docks closed until further notice because of high water and fast currents. An update on July 11 still listed the locks as closed. We found no municipal notice saying when they reopened that summer. Even in high season, the lock works as a municipal service that can be suspended.

What the upstream side reaches on its own

On the Cecebe side of the lock, a boat reaches the river up to Burk's Falls and the whole of Lake Cecebe without a lockage.

  • Burk's Falls riverfront launch, 170 Ryerson Crescent. A ramp with dockage, limited parking, washrooms at the adjacent Welcome Centre, and no launch fee. The Village describes boaters heading downstream from here toward Lake Cecebe.
  • Pulled Smokehouse. The canteen at the Burk's Falls Welcome Centre, beside the river launch and docks. Its hours are not published alongside the launch details.
  • Port Carmen Marina. On Lake Cecebe at 3077 Highway 520, with marine fuel, boat rentals and marine service, according to the municipal business directory.
  • Bean on the Dock. A café at Rockwynn Lodge on Lake Cecebe serving coffee and light café food on a dock. The directory lists weekend-morning hours.
  • South Horn Lake Road access. Armour Township lists a public Lake Cecebe access at the end of the road.

From the Cecebe side, then, the boating that doesn't depend on the lock covers a launch, fuel and service, a dockside coffee stop, and a river run into Burk's Falls.

What the downstream side reaches on its own

On the Ahmic side, a boat has Ahmic Lake, the approach to the lock, and the channel south.

  • Ahmic Marine, 91 Miller Street. It sits opposite the lock channel and advertises dock-slip rentals plus premium gas and diesel.
  • Ahmic Lake Resort. The municipal directory lists a marina with more than 50 slips, rentals and on-site marine fuel. The resort is also home to the Swiss Country House restaurant and pub. The resort also runs a boat launch, and fees apply.
  • Quiet Bay. The property on Ahmic Lake now runs an on-site restaurant called 124 Bistro.
  • The channel to Beaver Lake and Crawford Lake. A 2022 Northern Ontario Travel boating account describes Ahmic Lake connecting south to Beaver Lake and then Crawford Lake, and advises following the channel markers. The same account describes a shallow, weedy channel near the Quiet Bay landing that calls for no-wake speed. It also notes that the river beyond Ahmic Lake is broken up by dams and rapids and is not navigable along that route.

That account is from 2022. Its notes on route conditions still help, but it is not a current guide to which businesses are open or where public docking is allowed.

For a buyer, the two lists describe two different everyday boating lives. One centres on the river into Burk's Falls and Cecebe's own shoreline. The other centres on Ahmic's resort and marina cluster and the chain of lakes to the south. The lock adds the other lake as a summer bonus, booked in two-hour slots.

A lock built for steamers, still run by hand

The Ontario Government built the first lock at Magnetawan between 1883 and 1886 so steamers could run between Burk's Falls, Magnetawan and Ahmic Harbour. It was replaced in 1911 with the concrete structure in use today, according to the Ontario Heritage plaque text. The municipal brochure notes the lock raised or lowered steamers about ten feet. It names the boats that used it, including the Wenonah in 1886 and the Glenrosa in 1891, and says the last steamer, the Mike, was taken off the river around 1934.

Staff still work the valves by hand, and boats move through in batches. Historical sources give different distances for the route between Burk's Falls and Ahmic Harbour, so a timed run across the system is better worked out on the water than taken from a printed figure.

Questions buyers ask about the lock

Can I request a lockage outside the posted times? The municipality's page says no special requests will be made, and it asks boaters to follow the schedule closely.

What does it cost to use? The published fee is $5.00 per day.

Does the lock run after Labour Day? The posted season ends on the Sunday of Labour Day weekend, which was September 6 in 2026.

Where can I check the current season? The Municipality of Magnetawan posts opening notices on its news page and keeps the schedule on its Dams & Locks page.

If you are weighing a Cecebe shoreline against an Ahmic one, Coxworth & Associates can walk you through how each lake works for boating outside those ten weeks, from launches and fuel to the run into Burk's Falls or south toward Crawford Lake. If you already own on the river system, we would be glad to put together a complimentary valuation and marketing plan that shows buyers clearly what your side of the lock offers.
